India’s Road Network Becomes Second Largest in the World After the US
India’s road network has grown by 59% in the last nine years, making it the second-largest in the world after the US, according to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. The country’s road infrastructure now spans 145,240 km, up from 91,287 km in 2013-14. Previously, China had the second-largest road network. Speaking at a conference on ‘9 years achievements of government’ in New Delhi, Gadkari said India had set seven world records in the sector over the last nine years. The minister also noted that revenues from tolls rose from INR47.7bn ($640m) in 2013-14 to INR413.42bn ($5.56bn). The government aims to increase toll revenue to INR1.3tn ($17.5bn) by 2020, he added. The use of fastags has helped to reduce waiting times at toll plazas to 47 seconds. Gadkari said the government is taking various measures to reduce the time further to below 30 seconds.
