On Jharkhand’s upcoming foundation day, the state will witness the launch of India’s first bamboo-frame electric bicycle—a project that hopes to marry eco-friendly mobility with rural livelihoods. Designed by researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad in partnership with tribal artisans, the bicycle’s frame is made entirely from treated bamboo instead of metal. Engineers say bamboo offers an impressive strength-to-weight ratio, making the bike both sturdy and significantly lighter than traditional e-bikes. The choice of material also reduces the bike’s carbon footprint since bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource.

The model has been engineered with everyday commuters in mind. Its hub-mounted electric motor gives riders the option to pedal normally or use battery assistance for up to 60 kilometres on a single charge. The modular battery pack can be detached for charging at home or swapped out for a fully charged unit at dedicated kiosks. In a first for India, the bike also features an optional solar charging attachment that can recharge the battery while the cycle is parked, extending its range on sunny days. The company plans to offer the bamboo e-bike as a do-it-yourself kit costing around ₹15,000, which will include the bamboo frame pieces, electric components and assembly instructions. This approach allows customers to customise their bikes and fosters a sense of ownership, much like assembling one’s own furniture.

Beyond its green credentials, the project aims to create employment opportunities in Jharkhand’s tribal communities. Bamboo harvesting, treatment and frame fabrication will be carried out by local artisans, providing them with a steady source of income. The state government is reportedly exploring ways to provide microloans and training to villagers interested in participating. If the pilot programme is successful, the organisers hope to scale up production for urban markets across India. With concerns about air pollution and soaring fuel prices, a lightweight, affordable e-bike built from indigenous materials could be an attractive option for students and office-goers alike while spotlighting Jharkhand’s craftsmanship on the national stage.
