Air Traffic Control to Reduce Separation Between Aircraft at Delhi Airport

New Runway Becomes Operational

New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has become India’s busiest aviation hub, and to accommodate the growing air traffic, a fourth runway has been opened. The new runway, designated 29R-11L, will initially be used only for departures, but it will help reduce the separation between aircraft coming in to land on the runway closest to Gurgaon (29L-11R). This will result in faster operations both in the air and on the ground.

Improved Efficiency and Capacity

The opening of the fourth runway will allow air traffic control (ATC) to decrease the distance between two arriving aircraft from 6-6.5 nautical miles to 4-5 nautical miles. This reduction in separation will be possible because the new runway will be used exclusively for departures, while the nearby runway will be used for arrivals. In addition, an elevated taxiway has been constructed, which will reduce aircraft taxiing time between Terminal 1 (T1) and the two runways on the Gurgaon side of the airport.

Impact on Flight Handling Capacity

The increase in runway capacity will also have a positive impact on the airport’s hourly flight handling capacity. In its previous configuration with three runways, IGIA could handle up to 86 aircraft per hour. With the addition of a fourth runway, this capacity is expected to increase by 8-10%, subject to operational requirements. This increase in capacity will be crucial as international flights resume and grounded aircraft return to service.

Future Plans for Runway Maintenance

IGIA’s main runway (10/28) on the Dwarka side of the airport will be temporarily closed for re-carpeting in the coming weeks but is expected to resume operations before the end of the year. Subsequently, the runway closest to the Shivji statue side (11R/29L) will be closed for minor repairs for approximately two months around March next year. By May or June, all four runways at IGIA will be operational again.

Conclusion

The opening of the fourth runway at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport will improve efficiency, reduce aircraft separation, and increase the airport’s flight handling capacity. This development will benefit both domestic and international travelers, as well as the aviation industry as a whole.
