Indian Railways to Enforce Baggage Weight Limits Across Passenger Classes. Check Before Boarding Now.

India’s rail network is set to introduce baggage weight limits for passengers across all classes to streamline travel and reduce clutter inside coaches. Under the proposal approved by the Railway Board, passengers will soon need to adhere to specific luggage allowances depending on their ticket category. Officials say the move will bring the railways in line with airlines, where weight limits are standard practice, and discourage travellers from carrying excessive goods on passenger seats.

For those travelling in unreserved or general coaches, the limit will be 35 kilograms per person. Families travelling together may pool their allowance: two travellers can bring up to 70 kg without incurring a fee. Railway officials have clarified that passengers carrying more than the permitted weight will need to pay a prescribed penalty at the parcel office. The general class is the most crowded in long-distance trains, and authorities hope lighter loads will make boarding and seating smoother.

Sleeper class and AC three-tier passengers will be allowed to carry up to 40 kg of luggage per person. Those booking tickets in AC two-tier will be permitted 50 kg, while the highest allowance of 70 kg will apply to first AC compartments. These upper classes offer larger berths and more storage space; however, the railways will still enforce the limits to prevent bulky suitcases from occupying aisles or berths meant for sleeping.

To implement the policy, the railway ministry plans to install digital weighing scales at major stations and set up dedicated counters where passengers can weigh bags and pay any extra fees before boarding. There is also discussion of opening shops at stations selling travel accessories and packaging services, generating additional revenue and creating an airport-like environment. Authorities emphasise that the scheme is not intended to inconvenience passengers but to ensure that available space in coaches is used efficiently and that everyone travels comfortably.

Passengers should also be aware that these limits apply only to personal luggage carried on board; goods meant for commercial purposes must still be sent through the parcel service. The railways will publicise the changes through announcements and ticket-booking platforms before enforcement begins. Travellers planning long journeys are encouraged to pack responsibly to avoid surprise fees at the station.
