Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), along with two domestic engine manufacturers, is working on blending ethanol with diesel to reduce dependence on crude oil. Currently, the process is in the research and development phase. If successful, the blending of diesel with 5% ethanol could reduce the country’s dependence on crude oil. The government is aiming to double the ethanol blending in petrol to 20% by 2025. Diesel is the most widely used fuel in the transportation sector, so blending it with ethanol could significantly reduce the country’s crude oil imports.

Indian Oil developing blended diesel

According to SSV Ramakumar, the director of research and development at IOC, the company is working on blending diesel with 5% ethanol in test labs and research centres of two major Indian heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturers. However, there are concerns about the impact of blending ethanol with diesel on fuel injectors. Therefore, the blending process is still in the testing phase. Ramakumar expects to provide further updates on the blending of diesel with ethanol in the next six months.

Ethanol blending in petrol

Currently, petrol in India contains 10% ethanol, and the government is considering doubling this percentage by 2025. Ethanol blending in diesel is crucial as diesel is the most commonly used fuel in the country’s transportation sector. According to Ramakumar, studies on the use of E20 fuel (blended with 20% ethanol) in existing vehicles are expected to be completed by July this year.

Overall, blending diesel with ethanol could reduce the country’s dependence on crude oil and benefit the environment. However, the success of the blending process is still uncertain and requires further testing.
