India to Host ICC ODI World Cup as Sole Hosts for the First Time
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that India will be hosting the upcoming ODI World Cup as sole hosts for the first time. The previous three editions of the tournament, held in India, saw the country being co-hosts. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 5 and run till November 19, with 10 different cities hosting the matches across India. The marquee clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan has been scheduled for October 15 in Ahmedabad.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier sent the draft schedule to the ICC, and the official schedule has now been announced. Typically, the schedule for a World Cup is revealed well in advance, so fans have enough time to book their tickets and make their travel plans, along with local administrations being given enough time to prepare the venues. However, this time there has been a considerable delay primarily because of the uncertainty of Pakistan travelling to India.
A total of 10 teams will be in action, with eight qualifying via the Cricket World Cup Super League. The other two spots will be determined after the conclusion of the ongoing qualifier tournament in Zimbabwe on July 9. Team India will begin their campaign with a blockbuster clash against the most successful team in the history of the ODI World Cup, Australia.
