Istanbul: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released an analysis report stating that the incidents of misbehavior of co-passengers in commercial airline flights have increased by about 37 percent in the year 2022. The report highlights that commercial airlines have reported one incident of misbehavior per 835 flights, whereas in 2021, it was reported per 568 flights. The report also notes a 61 percent increase in incidents of drunkenness and verbal arguments in 2022.
Airlines industry expects profit of $9.8 billion
In addition, IATA expects the airlines industry to make a net profit of $9.8 billion this year. The industry’s performance has improved due to the increase in the number of passengers and the revival of the economies of various countries. IATA Director General Willie Walsh said that despite economic uncertainties, people are flying to reconnect, explore, and do business. The latest data shows that passenger traffic is more than 90 percent of the 2019 level.
Increase in the number of passengers at airports
At IATA’s Annual General Meeting in Istanbul, Willie Walsh highlighted that airports are overcrowded, hotel occupancy is rising, local economies are rebuilding, and the airlines industry has returned to profitability. The airlines industry is expected to generate a revenue of $803 billion and a net profit of $9.8 billion this year, with an average earning of $2.25 per passenger.
Airlines industry also pays tax
IATA also rejected the argument that the international aviation sector is not taxed. The analysis of nearly seven billion international flight tickets shows that airlines have paid $380 billion in taxes and fees. IATA comprises more than 300 airlines, including Indian airlines. Willie Walsh stated that the argument that international aviation is not taxed is not correct.
In conclusion, while the airlines industry is expected to make a net profit of $9.8 billion this year, the incidents of misbehavior of co-passengers in commercial airline flights have increased significantly. The industry should focus on ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers while operating in an environment of overcrowded airports and rising hotel occupancy.
