Bajaj Auto is making strides into the future of mobility with its subsidiary, Chetak Technologies Limited (CTL), by exploring the potential for hydrogen-powered vehicles.

This initiative positions Bajaj as potentially the first Indian manufacturer to develop and market a hydrogen engine production model, signaling a significant pivot towards alternative fuel technologies.

Leadership and Technological Advancement
Recently, Bajaj appointed Abraham Joseph as the managing director of CTL. Joseph, the former CTO of Bajaj Auto Limited, played a crucial role in the development of Bajaj’s flagship brands including Pulsar, and also guided the creation of models like Platina, CT, Avenger, and Dominar. His leadership is expected to drive significant innovation in hydrogen technology at CTL.

Succession and Continued Innovation at Bajaj Auto
Following Joseph’s transition to CTL, Ramtilak Ananthan has been appointed as the new CTO of Bajaj Auto Ltd. Ananthan, who was promoted to vice president – R&D in 2013, has been instrumental in transitioning all Bajaj Auto products to BS4 emission norms and later to Euro 5/BS6 and OBD2A standards under his leadership as head of Test & Validation.

Expansion into Alternative Energy
Bajaj’s exploration of hydrogen power comes in addition to its ventures into other alternative energy sources, including electric through its acquisition of Yulu and its development of e-bikes.

The company is also exploring CNG options for two-wheelers, showcasing its commitment to diversifying energy sources beyond traditional petrol.

Global Context and Competitive Landscape
While no other Indian manufacturers are currently known to be developing hydrogen-powered two-wheelers, Bajaj’s move comes as global industry leaders, particularly the Japanese Big Four, are actively investing in hydrogen vehicle technology. This highlights a growing trend in the automotive industry towards sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives.
