Gurugram Metro Rail Limited’s New Developments
Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) has made significant updates to the previous Detailed Project Report (DPR) and received the necessary approvals. A new skywalk is set to be constructed between the Old Gurugram Metro and the Railway Station, enhancing the connectivity in the area. This initiative aims to improve passenger movement between key locations, including Sector-45, Cyber Park, Sector-47, and Old Gurugram Metro Station. The skywalk is designed to mimic airport standards, ensuring a smooth and efficient experience for commuters.
Planned Infrastructure and Costs
The project is expected to incur considerable expenses, with the revised DPR indicating a budget of approximately ₹5,452 crore, aimed at expediting the tender process. A crucial meeting took place recently to discuss these developments, resulting in the approval of a one-kilometer-long skywalk. Currently, passengers primarily rely on auto rickshaws and city buses to reach the railway station, with about 10 autos and 50 buses making the rounds daily. With the new metro connectivity, it’s projected that around five lakh passengers will benefit from improved access each day.
Future Expansion and Government Support
The foundation stone for the Old City Metro Project was laid by the Prime Minister in February 2023, with the initial project plan drafted back in 2017. The financial burden of the project will be shared equally between GMRL and the Central Government. This ambitious plan includes a 28.8-kilometer route stretching from the Old City to Udyog Vihar, featuring 25 stations along the way. Additionally, there are ongoing plans to extend the metro line from Rejangla Chowk to Sector-21 in Dwarka, Delhi, which received government approval in October 2022.
