**Gujarat High Court dismisses Teesta Setalvad’s bail application in 2002 riots case**
– The Gujarat High Court has dismissed the bail application filed by social activist Teesta Setalvad in the case related to the alleged fabrication of evidence to establish a conspiracy behind the 2002 riots.
– The court has ordered Setalvad to surrender immediately.
– Setalvad’s counsel requested the court to stay the order for 30 days so that she could approach the apex court, but the request was rejected.
– Setalvad was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on September 2, 2022, after the high court admitted her bail plea.
– Setalvad, along with former DGP RB Sreekumar and another ex-IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, was arrested in June 2022 after the top court rejected Zakia Jafri’s appeal against the closure report filed by a special investigation team (SIT) granting clean chit to PM Modi and others.
– Setalvad’s counsel argued that the charges invoked against her are not applicable and that she had never signed any forged document.
– The state government opposed the bail application and alleged that Setalvad acted as a tool of Congress party leader Ahmed Patel and conspired with Sreekumar and Bhatt to propagate a larger conspiracy behind the 2002 riots.
