The Central Government’s General Budget 2025
The Central Government’s General Budget for 2025 has been introduced, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced several measures to support the middle class and laborers. During her eighth budget speech on Saturday, she revealed plans to register ‘Gig Workers’ on the e-Shram portal.
Impact on Gig Workers
This initiative is expected to benefit over 1 crore workers in the country. So, what changes can we expect from this announcement, and who exactly are these gig workers?
Identity Cards for Workers
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the registration of 1 crore gig workers on the e-Shram portal will facilitate the issuance of identity cards for these workers. She emphasized the significant role that gig workers, especially those on online platforms, play in enhancing the service economy. Therefore, the government is taking steps to ensure their recognition and support.
Health Coverage Under PMJAY
In addition to identity cards, the government will provide health coverage for these gig workers under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). The budget includes plans for a social security scheme specifically aimed at gig workers on online platforms. Furthermore, the government has proposed issuing UPI-linked credit cards worth Rs 30,000 for these workers.
Understanding Gig Workers
Gig workers are freelancers who work for various employers rather than being permanently hired by a single company. The government’s announcement aims to extend social security benefits to these workers through the e-Shram portal, enhancing their financial stability.
Background of the E-Shram Portal
The e-Shram portal was launched in August 2021 to assist laborers in the unorganized sector across the country, particularly those who do not have access to EPFO or ESIC benefits. The age limit for applying for an E-Shram Card is set between 16 to 59 years. To register, individuals need a valid mobile number, Aadhaar Card, a bank account, skill documents, and an education certificate.
