Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari urged the automobile industry to give additional concessions to customers who scrap their old vehicles when purchasing a new one. He noted that proof of scrapping should fetch tangible benefits at the counter.
Gadkari said he had discussed supportive measures with the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister. The minister highlighted that such incentives would encourage cleaner fleets and faster renewal of vehicles on roads.
At an industry meeting, he stated that buyers producing valid scrappage documents should be rewarded through discounts and tax reliefs handled in coordination with authorities. The emphasis was on making the programme widely accessible.
Industry body SIAM said the latest GST slab cuts will give new momentum to the vehicle sector. The group projected advantages for first-time buyers and the middle class, which could expand the reach of personal mobility.
Officials added that supportive policy combined with manufacturer offers would help both demand and compliance. The scrappage-linked benefit is positioned as a key lever in the current phase.
