Delhi University to Use EVMs for DUSU Election
Delhi University’s Chief Election Officer has announced that the upcoming Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) election will adopt electronic voting machines (EVMs). This decision aligns the DUSU with national election methods, providing students with a more practical and modern approach to exercising their voting rights.
A Digital Approach for DUSU
According to the issued notice, the DUSU panel will use EVMs for the election scheduled for September 22. This will be the first DUSU election in four years, with the previous one held in 2019. The outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020 and 2021, along with potential disruptions in the academic calendar in 2022, had previously prevented the conduct of these elections.
Paper Ballots for College Students’ Unions
While the DUSU has opted for a digital approach, the University has decided to retain the traditional method of paper ballots for individual college students’ union elections. According to the notice, it is the responsibility of each college to procure, print, and manage these paper ballots.
Important Dates to Remember
For those interested in participating in the DUSU election, September 12 is the last date to submit nomination papers, scrutinize the nominated candidates, and publish the list. September 13 is the final date for nominations withdrawal and the publication of the final list of candidates.
The voting timing is division-specific, with day scholars expected to cast their votes between 8:30 am and 1 pm, while evening scholars have been allocated the time slot of 3 pm to 7:30 pm. The date for vote counting is yet to be announced according to the circular.
These announcements highlight the evolving processes of the DUSU and college students’ unions, aiming to ensure robust student representation and active participation.
