Dhiren, a man from Patan, Gujarat, was initially looking for a job but faced challenges in finding the right one. Instead of giving up, he took the initiative to start his own business by researching the market and discovering the demand for donkey milk.
He began with just 20 donkeys, and now his herd has grown to over 42. Dhiren’s primary customers are in South India, particularly in states like Karnataka and Kerala, where the demand for donkey milk is especially high. His client list includes several cosmetic companies that incorporate donkey milk into their products.
The Growing Market for Donkey Milk in India
The profitability of donkey milk is significant, as it is priced much higher than cow or buffalo milk, ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 per liter. Not only is donkey milk known for its skin benefits, but it also offers health advantages, such as aiding in blood sugar management and improving circulation.
In recent years, the donkey milk business has seen substantial growth across India, particularly in states like Rajasthan and Gujarat. The Kharani breed of donkeys in Rajasthan is particularly sought after, while in Gujarat, Halari donkey milk enjoys a strong market presence.
