**Monsoon session of Parliament to begin on July 20: Pralhad Joshi**

– The Monsoon session of Parliament, during which the contentious Delhi Services Ordinance may be brought in as a legislation, will begin on July 20, according to parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi.
– The session will be spread over 17 sittings until August 11 and is likely to be politically significant as the opposition aims to close ranks against the Modi government over the alleged “attack” on India’s federal structure.
– The Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government has already challenged the ordinance in the Supreme Court.
– Most opposition parties, except Congress, have announced their intent to oppose the bill in the Upper House, where the ruling NDA does not have a clear majority.
– Opposition parties will also seek to corner the government over the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur and the Prime Minister’s emphasis on implementing the Uniform Civil Code.
– Parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi urged political parties to contribute towards “productive discussions” during the session.
– Congress leader Jairam Ramesh responded by saying that the government should allow discussion on all issues of concern to the people, including those on which the Prime Minister has maintained silence.
– The government is also expected to introduce the National Research Foundation Bill, which aims to boost the country’s research competence in science and technology.
