In an effort to curb rising onion prices due to hoarding, the Central Government has started selling onions at a subsidized rate of ₹35 per kilogram in the NCR region. Despite sufficient stock in the country, hoarding has led to a sharp increase in prices.
To combat this, the government has launched onion sales through NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation) and aims to break the hoarding network. By the third week of this month, onions will be available at lower prices across the country.
Government agencies are actively working on partnerships with cooperative societies and large retail chains to ensure wider distribution. Currently, the government has a buffer stock of 4.70 lakh tonnes of onions.

Minister Prahlad Joshi’s Announcement
Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution Minister Prahlad Joshi flagged off the onion-selling vans on Thursday. As soon as the van reached Krishi Bhavan, a large crowd gathered, with customers forming lines to purchase onions at the subsidized price.
This initiative is expected to bring much-needed relief to consumers, as retail onion prices had soared to between ₹80 and ₹100 per kilogram in various parts of the country.
