The implementation of the new Delhi Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy will take some more time as it is still under development. In the meantime, the Delhi government has decided to extend the current EV policy until March 2024.
As of August 2023, EV sales in Delhi accounted for 10.71% of the total vehicle sales, and the cumulative EV sales for the year 2023 reached 11.02%. The government has confirmed that individuals who applied for subsidies under the policy within the six-month extension period will receive the benefits and subsidies they are eligible for.
Policy Expiration and Extensions
- The original EV policy, which was introduced in August 2020, expired in August 2023 after its initial three-year tenure.
- The policy was extended for six months until December 2023 but without offering subsidies or road tax exemptions during this extension period.
- The policy was then further extended until June 2024, but again, EV buyers during this period did not receive the usual subsidies and tax benefits.
Upcoming Changes and Policy Extensions
Delhi’s Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot has directed the department to prepare a proposal for further extension of the EV policy and submit it to the Cabinet for approval. This step is expected to bring back key incentives, such as subsidies and road tax exemptions, for new EV buyers.
Work on EV Policy 2.0
The government has begun working on EV Policy 2.0, and it is expected to take 2-3 months to finalize the draft. This policy is a core part of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s initiatives, originally introduced in August 2020 to combat vehicle-related pollution and boost EV adoption to 25% by 2024 at the national level.
According to a senior official, delays in the approval of the new policy were due to various factors, including the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the absence of Cabinet approval. Moreover, former CM Arvind Kejriwal was imprisoned at the time, further slowing the process.
Expected Cabinet Meeting
With Atishi now appointed as the new Chief Minister, a Cabinet meeting is expected soon, and the EV policy extension is likely to be granted. According to data shared by the Transport Department, 9% of the total registered vehicles in Delhi between 2020 and 2024 were electric.
Delhi EV Sales Data
As of August 2024, 10.71% of vehicle sales in Delhi were EVs, with 11.02% of total sales in 2023 being electric. From January to August 2023, Delhi saw the sale and registration of 53,587 electric vehicles, which included:
