The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has issued a clarification regarding the transportation of alcohol within metro trains. As per the latest statement, the rules for carrying alcohol will be governed by the excise laws of the respective state.
State-Specific Rules in the NCR
An official explained that while traveling between NCR cities like Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad, the regulations differ. Passengers can carry two sealed bottles of alcohol within Delhi, but only one sealed bottle in the neighboring NCR cities.
Changes in Policy
Previously, DMRC had allowed passengers to carry two sealed bottles of alcohol on metro trains since June last year, which was met with objections from the Delhi government, citing it as a violation of excise rules.
Consequences of Violations
DMRC has also emphasized that consuming alcohol or engaging in any inappropriate behavior inside the metro trains can lead to fines and imprisonment. This rule applies universally across the metro network, excluding the Airport Express Line where restrictions are tighter.
Unified Compliance
Anuj Dayal, Chief Executive Director of DMRC, mentioned that the enforcement of these rules depends on the excise laws of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, the states where the metro operates. The statement did not specify the exact number of bottles allowed but reiterated adherence to the respective state laws.
