In a landmark decision aimed at combating the growing menace of air pollution, the Delhi government has announced that all high-rise buildings in the city will now be required to install anti-smog guns. This initiative will make Delhi the first city in the country to implement such a comprehensive, round-the-year pollution-control strategy.
The announcement was made by Environment Minister Gopal Rai, who confirmed that under the Environment (Protection) Act, the use of anti-smog guns will be mandatory for all tall structures, both public and private.
All Buildings Over 10,000 Square Meters Must Install Multiple Anti-Smog Guns
According to the directive, buildings spanning more than 10,000 square meters will need to install at least three anti-smog guns. Additionally, for every 5,000 square meters of built-up area, at least one anti-smog gun must be in operation.
The rule will be applicable to a wide range of structures including commercial complexes, malls, hotels, office buildings, and residential societies, as well as large institutional campuses such as hospitals, universities, and metro stations. Even new construction projects that fall within the designated size category must comply.
Only Treated Water Will Be Used to Ensure Responsible Water Usage
To address concerns around water consumption, the government has made it clear that only treated water will be permitted in these guns. Each machine is expected to consume a maximum of 500 liters per hour. The anti-smog guns will release ultra-fine water droplets, ranging in size from 5 to 20 microns, capable of settling particulate matter (PM) such as PM 2.5 and PM 10 effectively.
Responsibility for Implementation Assigned to Multiple Government Agencies
The responsibility for enforcing and monitoring this directive will rest with several civic and administrative bodies, including the Municipal Corporations, Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Public Works Department (PWD), New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), and Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC).
These agencies will ensure compliance and carry out inspections as needed. The Environment Minister emphasized that the directive aims to institutionalize clean air practices and is a step toward a more sustainable and breathable Delhi.
