Delhi is taking a significant leap in traffic management and road safety with the introduction of AI-based Automatic Number Plate Reader cameras. This move is set to revolutionize how traffic rules are enforced in India’s capital.

Enhanced Traffic Monitoring

  • Previous System: Earlier, cameras in Delhi were primarily used for monitoring high-speed vehicles and red-light violations.
  • New Upgrades: The AI-based cameras will now also target violations like riding two-wheelers without helmets, triple riding, and driving cars without seat belts.

AI-Based Camera Operations

  • Functionality: The AI cameras will automatically read the vehicle’s number plate upon any traffic rule violation and link it to the vehicle portal where all vehicle records are maintained.
  • Efficiency: These cameras will generate e-challans in real-time and update them on www.echallan.parivahan.gov.in without any manual intervention.
  • Scope: The new system will cover various offenses, including helmetless riding, wrong-side driving, triple riding, seatbelt violations, and using mobile phones while driving.

Road Accident Statistics and Challan Data

  • Accidents in 2023: Delhi witnessed 2,338 road accidents resulting in 1,457 fatalities.
  • Helmet Violations: There were 1.98 lakh challans issued for riding without helmets.
  • Other Violations: Stop line violations, triple riding, and mobile phone use while driving also saw significant numbers of challans issued.

Implementation and Operation

  • Tender Process: Companies have been invited through a tender process to install and operate these cameras.
  • Initial Contract: The first contract with the selected company will be for six months, with the potential to extend it to five years based on performance.

Delhi’s initiative to employ AI-based cameras for traffic rule enforcement is a proactive step towards reducing road accidents and ensuring compliance with traffic laws. This technological advancement is expected to bring a significant change in the way traffic violations are monitored and penalized in the city, ultimately contributing to safer roads and more responsible driving behavior.
