Delhi Government’s Commitment to Clean Up Waste

The Delhi government has announced a significant initiative aimed at tackling the city’s waste problem. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa expressed that the current government is committed to achieving what the previous AAP government could not accomplish over the last decade.

Targets for Waste Removal

Sirsa stated that by December 2025, the government aims to eliminate 3 million metric tonnes of old waste. Notably, the height of the garbage mountain at the Okhla landfill has already been reduced from 60 meters to just 20 meters. More than 30 acres of the 62-acre site have been leveled, marking substantial progress in waste management efforts.

Waste Processing Progress

So far, the government has processed 56 lakh metric tonnes of waste through bio-mining and other methods. In a recent phase, over 6.5 lakh metric tonnes of garbage were processed in just a few months. This cleanup is expected to improve the quality of life for residents living near landfill sites.

Inspection of Okhla Landfill

On Thursday, Minister Sirsa, along with Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh and other officials, inspected the Okhla landfill site. During the visit, they reviewed ongoing waste processing activities. Sirsa highlighted the government’s goal of removing all “garbage mountains” from Delhi by 2028, contrasting the previous government’s inaction over the past ten years.

Historical Change in Environmental Management

Sirsa compared the disappearance of garbage mountains to the extinction of dinosaurs, emphasizing the historic shift in environmental management taking place in Delhi. The initiative aims not only to improve urban land but also to reduce fire risks and prevent groundwater pollution.

Focus on Clean Air and Water

The government’s priorities include ensuring clean air and water for Delhi’s residents. Sirsa noted that the removal of waste is crucial for preventing groundwater contamination and controlling harmful substances in water.
