Delhi Transport Department Cracks Down on Overage Vehicles
The Delhi Transport Department has intensified its campaign against overage vehicles, seizing a significant number in recent weeks. Among the confiscated vehicles are 260 diesel four-wheelers exceeding 10 years of age, alongside 1,156 petrol two-wheelers and 818 petrol three and four-wheelers that are over 15 years old. This initiative aims to enforce environmental regulations and reduce vehicular emissions, with the campaign set to extend until December.
New Online Portal for Vehicle Scrapping
In addition to the crackdown, the department has launched an online portal to aid in the scrapping, recovery, or sale of impounded vehicles. This platform is designed to streamline the scrapping process, providing vehicle owners with a clear standard operating procedure (SOP).
Adherence to Guidelines and Legal Compliance
Moreover, the Delhi Transport Department has mandated Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities (RVSFs) to strictly follow the 2024 guidelines for end-of-life vehicle management. Non-compliance could result in exclusion from the program. This drive aligns with a 2018 Supreme Court ruling banning diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years from operating in the capital.
So far, the department has deregistered over 5.5 million overage vehicles in Delhi, reflecting a significant step towards a cleaner environment.
