In a tragic incident following heavy rainfall in the capital, the roof of Terminal 1 at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport collapsed, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to eight others. Following the incident, the airport operator, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), has suspended all flights from Terminal 1 until further notice.

Temporary Flight Relocation

DIAL has announced that until Terminal 1 is restored, all related flights will be operated from Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. A technical committee has been formed to investigate the roof collapse incident at Terminal 1.

Police Investigation

IGI Airport Deputy Commissioner of Police Usha Rangnani stated that a case has been registered under IPC sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others).

Compensation for Victims

DIAL has committed to providing all possible assistance to the affected individuals and the families of the deceased. The family of the deceased will receive a compensation of ₹20 lakh, while each person with minor injuries will receive ₹3 lakh.

Formation of Technical Committee

To investigate the cause of the incident, DIAL has formed a technical committee that will submit its report as soon as possible. DIAL is also working jointly with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Delhi Police, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to assess the situation and restore operations.

Minister’s Visit

Upon learning about the incident, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu visited the departure area of Terminal 1. After a thorough briefing, he ordered an in-depth inspection of the entire structure of Terminal 1. The minister directed that Terminal 1 should only be reopened after a complete investigation. He also instructed that flights be promptly relocated to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 to minimize disruption.

Minister Naidu visited AIIMS hospital to meet the injured and stated that the government will provide compensation to the family of the deceased and the injured.
