The rooftop of Palika Bazaar is coming back to life after three long years. The lush park that once adorned the market’s ceiling is seeing a revival. Workers have laid down fresh grass, and installations of LED lights, granite tiles, and stainless steel railings are underway. By the end of this month, the beautification efforts are expected to be completed.
A Spot for Relaxation
The green park atop Palika Bazaar has always been a serene spot for Delhiites. After a shopping spree in the market, people often relaxed in this green oasis. However, during 2020-21, the park and its soil layer had to be removed due to leakage and dampness issues in the roof. This left the area looking quite desolate.
Restoration and Waterproofing
New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) undertook extensive waterproofing of the entire market roof. This was essential to prevent any inconvenience to the underground shop owners and make the area safer for visitors.
Ensuring Proper Lighting
NDMC Vice Chairman Satish Upadhyay mentioned that the park will have ample lighting to ensure that visitors feel safe even during nighttime.
The Unique Palika Bazaar
Palika Bazaar is one of the country’s first underground markets, built nearly 50 years ago. It attracts visitors from all over India. With the restoration work nearing completion, fresh soil and green grass are being laid down once again on the rooftop, bringing back the charm of the park.
