Deadly Boat Capsize Off Mumbai Coast Claims 13 Lives, Rescue Operations Underway For Survivors

On Wednesday afternoon, a tragic accident occurred off the coast of Mumbai when a boat capsized, resulting in the deaths of thirteen people.

The Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, reported that a naval boat collided with a passenger ship named ‘Neelkamal’ near Butcher Island around 3:55 PM.

As of 7:30 PM, rescue teams had successfully saved 101 individuals, but unfortunately, the incident claimed the lives of 10 civilians and 3 naval personnel. The boat was en route to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist destination, from the Gateway of India when the collision happened.

Ongoing Rescue Operations

Following the accident, rescue operations were promptly initiated, involving the Navy, Coast Guard, and local police. These teams deployed 11 crafts and 4 helicopters to search for survivors and provide assistance.

Two individuals who sustained serious injuries were transported to the Naval Hospital for urgent medical care. Chief Minister Fadnavis promised that comprehensive information about any remaining missing individuals would be available by the next morning, ensuring that the community is kept informed during this difficult time.

Support for Victims’ Families

In light of this heartbreaking incident, the Chief Minister has announced financial assistance for the families of those who lost their lives. Each bereaved family will receive an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

Furthermore, the police and navy will conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision, aiming to uncover the details of what transpired and prevent such tragedies in the future.
