Onion Prices Surge in Delhi-NCR, Cause Worry for Consumers
Once again onion prices have started making people cry in Delhi-NCR. People seem to be worried due to the increase in the price of onion. Last week, onion was available at the rate of Rs 35-40 per kg. Now its price has become Rs 70-80 per kg. The average and retail prices of onion have increased by 57 percent. The Central Government has taken a big decision on the rising prices of onion. The government on Friday decided to increase the sale of onion from the buffer stock at a concessional rate of Rs 25 per kg.
On the increased prices of onion, an onion trader from Ghazipur vegetable market said, “The arrival of onion is less, due to which the prices have increased. Today the rates are Rs 350 (per 5 kg). Yesterday, it was Rs 300. Earlier it was Rs 200. A week ago the rates were Rs 200, Rs 160 or Rs 250 etc. Prices have increased since last week. Rates have increased due to shortage in supply.
When onion prices increased in Ghazipur market, a person who had come to buy vegetables said, “We have come here to buy onions. Before Navratri, onion rates were Rs 50, now they are Rs 70 per kg. Our purchase is Rs 70 per kg and we will sell it at Rs 80 per kg. Earlier it was Rs 30-40 per kg. If this continues then the rate will reach Rs 100 per kg. Onion rates have increased the most. The prices of tomatoes have also increased. Earlier tomatoes were Rs 20 per kg, now they are Rs 40-45 per kg. If this continues then tomato will also reach Rs 70 per kg.”
