China Calls for Mutual Trust in Security and Stability in the Region Amid India-US Defence and Hi-Tech Trade Deals
India and the US recently signed a landmark agreement for co-production of jet engines with an unprecedented transfer of technology, boosting defence cooperation between the two countries. The US has rarely, if ever, signed a similar agreement with a country that is neither a NATO member nor a treaty ally. Additionally, India is looking to purchase 31 armed predator drones from the US. However, China has called upon “relevant countries” to act in ways that are conducive to mutual trust between regional countries in the field of security and stability in the region. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson emphasised that “military cooperation between states should not undermine regional peace and stability, target any third party, or even harm the interests of any third party”. The Chinese state media has also expressed similar sentiments about India’s ties with the US, calling for calm and sober choices. The Global Times newspaper has claimed that becoming a pawn in the US’ containment of China doesn’t align with India’s interests and principles nor preserve its dignity as a major power. The paper stated that differences between India and the US were deliberately glossed over during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US.
