**Chandrayaan-3: India’s third lunar mission set to launch on July 14**
– India’s third lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3, is scheduled to lift off from the spaceport in Sriharikota at 2.35pm on July 14.
– The mission will be carried out by the GSLV-Mk3 or LVM3 launch vehicle, and if successful, the lander, named Vikram, will touch down on the Moon on August 23 or 24.
– The chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), S Somanath, stated that the landing is planned to coincide with the sunrise on the Moon, allowing for 14-15 Earth days of work.
– Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 and consists of three modules: propulsion, lander, and rover.
– The total weight of the spacecraft is 3,900 kg, with the propulsion module weighing 2,148 kg and the lander module, including the rover, weighing 1,752 kg.
– The proposed landing site for the mission will be 70 degrees south, as the South Pole would not receive sunlight and the lander and rover would have no power.
– ISRO is confident of a successful soft-landing this time, and several changes have been made to the lander, including strengthening the legs, increasing the velocity tolerance level, and adding new sensors.
– The life of the lander and rover is expected to be 14 Earth days, but it could be extended if the batteries get recharged during the next sunrise.
– Once the lander touches down, the rover named Pragyan will be deployed and begin to move on the lunar surface using its wheels.
– The rover’s movement will be restricted to the lander’s observational area, and it is equipped with cameras for obstacle avoidance.
– The lander and rover will carry a total of six payloads, including ones for spectroscopy and thermal conductivity measurement.
– The mission also includes a payload from NASA for lunar laser ranging studies.
Overall, Chandrayaan-3 aims to build upon the success of the previous Chandrayaan missions and further explore the lunar surface.
