Isro Completes Critical Trans-Lunar Injection for Chandrayaan-3

Isro (Indian Space Research Organisation) successfully completed the critical trans-lunar injection (TLI) on Tuesday, propelling Chandrayaan-3 on its journey to the Moon. The propulsion module, carrying the landing module with Vikram (the lander) and Pragyan (the rover), will now travel in a straight path to reach the lunar orbit. Isro stated that Chandrayaan-3 is expected to reach the initial lunar orbit on August 5, 2023, where further manoeuvres will be performed to bring it down to the desired 100km circular orbit. The space agency has not yet confirmed the exact number of Moon-bound manoeuvres required.

Chandrayaan-3’s Journey

  • Isro completed the trans-lunar injection (TLI) on Tuesday, propelling Chandrayaan-3 towards the Moon.
  • Once it reaches the initial lunar orbit, Isro will perform a series of manoeuvres to achieve the desired 100km circular orbit.
  • The TLI was carried out between 12am and 1am, but the duration of the operation has not been disclosed.
  • Between the launch on July 14 and Tuesday, Isro completed five Earth-bound manoeuvres (EBMs) to increase the altitude of the spacecraft.
  • The TLI was planned at perigee to attain maximum velocity and better control the direction of the spacecraft.

Isro’s successful completion of the TLI is a significant milestone for the Chandrayaan-3 mission. The spacecraft is now on its way to the Moon, and Isro will continue to perform the necessary manoeuvres to ensure it reaches the desired orbit. Chandrayaan-3’s journey represents India’s ambition to become a major player in future lunar missions.
