India: A Major Player in the Global Car Market π
India is now one of the largest car markets in the world. Many top car brands manufacture their vehicles here and sell them globally. Interestingly, some cars that do not do well in India are thriving in international markets.
Popular Models Made in India π
Cars like the Honda City, Nissan Magnite, Hyundai Verna, and Jeep Meridian are examples. These models were initially designed for Indian customers, but their popularity has surged abroad.
Honda Elevate: A Case Study π
Take the Honda Elevate, for example. Launched in September 2023, it aimed to capture the growing SUV market in India. However, local sales were disappointing. To tackle this, Honda started exporting the Elevate to Japan, where it is marketed as the WR-V. In FY 2025, Honda produced 67,488 Elevate units, with 22,321 sold in India and a whopping 45,167 exported.
Hyundai Verna’s Journey π
Similarly, the Hyundai Verna was launched in 2023 but faced tough competition from SUVs in the Indian market. To utilize its production capacity, Hyundai began exporting Verna to regions like the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. In FY 2025, over 50,000 units were exported.
Nissan Magnite and Jeep Meridian π
The Nissan Magnite, launched in 2020, reflects this trend too. In FY 24, it sold 30,146 units domestically and exported 9,314. By FY 25, domestic sales were 27,881, while exports reached 29,155. Jeep’s Meridian is also following suit, with more exports than domestic sales.
India is becoming a key hub for car manufacturing, with many vehicles finding success beyond its borders. π
