Nitish Government’s Initiative for North Bihar
The Nitish government has made a significant move to support North Bihar, an area that suffers from annual flood devastation. They have announced the construction of a new high-level bridge, stretching 3.35 kilometers over the Bagmati River in Aurai. This bridge will be integrated into the Hathori-Atrar-Bawangama-Aurai State Highway, making it a crucial infrastructure project for the region. The state highway itself will extend for 21.30 kilometers and will include additional bridges and culverts along the route.
Funding and Project Approval
In a recent meeting led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the State Council of Ministers approved a comprehensive scheme worth Rs 815 crore for this initiative. To facilitate the project, 15.03 acres of land will be acquired. This bridge is one of six roads that have received approval for construction as part of the Bihar State Highway Project-4 (Phase-1). The Asian Development Bank will be providing a loan for the bridge’s construction, which is set to be carried out by the Bihar State Road Development Corporation (BSRDC) next year. The bridge will connect Garha on National Highway 57 to Aurai, improving overall connectivity in the region.
Construction Timeline and Expected Benefits
Construction is anticipated to begin in January 2025, with the tender process for the two-lane road scheduled for this month. Once a construction agency is selected, work will commence promptly. The NH 57 two-lane road will be 10 meters wide, and once completed, it will significantly reduce the distance from Aurai to the district headquarters by 40 kilometers. Given the annual flooding caused by heavy rains in Nepal, which affects several districts in Bihar, this bridge will provide much-needed relief to local residents during flood seasons, minimizing disruptions and easing the burden of relief efforts.
