In a significant move to regulate school fee structures in the national capital, the Delhi Cabinet has approved the “Delhi School Fee (Regulation of Collection and Transparency) Ordinance.” This ordinance aims to curb arbitrary fee hikes by private schools and bring more accountability and transparency into the education system.
Delhi Government Tightens Grip on School Fee Structures Across 1,677 Private Schools
The ordinance will soon be sent to the President of India for final approval through the Lieutenant Governor. Once the President gives assent, it will become law and will be applicable to all 1,677 private schools operating in Delhi.
No Fee Increase Without Government Permission
Under the new law, private schools will not be allowed to increase their fees without obtaining prior permission from the Delhi government. This regulation is set to come into effect starting April 1, 2025. Any fees collected beyond this date without approval will either have to be refunded to the parents or adjusted in future payments.
Political Reaction: Demand for Wider Consultation Before Ordinance Passed
Leader of Opposition Ramvir Singh Bidhuri criticized the move, stating that the government should have held consultations with all stakeholders before passing the ordinance. He emphasized that issues regarding school accessibility and affordability should have been addressed through dialogue rather than a sudden decision.
