The Supreme Court Adjourns Bail Applications of Manish Sisodia to September 4
The Supreme Court has adjourned the bail applications of former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia till September 4. Sisodia is facing charges of money laundering and corruption for alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of a now-scrapped liquor policy in Delhi. He has been in custody since February and is being investigated by both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Directorate of Enforcement (ED).
Background
The controversy began with the excise policy framed by the Delhi government to boost revenue and reform the liquor trade in 2021. The policy was later withdrawn due to allegations of irregularities in its implementation. The investigations by the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI claim that the policy favored private entities at the cost of the public exchequer, leading to corruption charges. Manish Sisodia, a prominent leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, was arrested in connection with this case.
Sisodia’s bail applications were rejected by the Special Judge MK Nagpal of Rouse Avenue Courts in Delhi on March 31 and April 28. The Delhi High Court also denied him bail in the money laundering case related to the previous liquor policy implementation. Sisodia has challenged these verdicts in the Supreme Court.
Court Proceedings
A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti was hearing Sisodia’s pleas against the Delhi High Court’s denial of bail in both the CBI and ED cases. The bench said it will consider the plea for interim bail at a later time along with the regular bail application. Senior Advocate Doctor Abhishek Manu Singhvi raised the plea for interim bail on humanitarian grounds to enable Sisodia to visit his ailing wife.
The bench asked the CBI to clearly specify how the money trail is established. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju stated that Sisodia’s wife needs to undergo an independent evaluation by AIIMS. However, the bench said that as long as she is consulting a reputed doctor, it is not necessary to change the doctor.
