Atul V. Bedekar, the Director of the renowned V. P. Bedekar & Sons group, passed away at the age of 56 after a prolonged battle with cancer. He breathed his last on Friday around 12:30 a.m. at a private hospital in Mumbai.
Bedekar’s last rites were performed at a crematorium in south Mumbai, where family, friends, and business associates paid their final respects. As a mark of respect, all shops and outlets of the 113-year-old Bedekar group remained closed.
The Bedekar group, known for its spices, pickles, papads, and ready-mixes, was established by the late V. P. Bedekar in 1910 as a small grocery shop in Girgaum. In 1917, V. V. Bedekar, the teenage son of V. P. Bedekar, introduced a range of spices, and in 1921, they started selling pickles. These products gained popularity among connoisseurs, leading to the expansion of Bedekar shops in Thakurdwar, Parel, Dadar, and Fort.
To meet the growing demands, V. V. Bedekar added five new manufacturing units and transformed the business into a private limited company in 1943. Currently, the Bedekar group has a turnover exceeding Rs 100 crore.
The Bedekar brand and products have become household names in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and are also available internationally. Their products are widely distributed in the United States, Canada, Middle East, Australia, Europe, and far eastern countries.
Atul V. Bedekar’s demise is a significant loss to the spice and pickle industry, and his contributions to the family business will always be remembered.
