In a recent excavation of Siri Fort, Delhi, archaeologists have discovered a historical secret tunnel from the 14th century. The tunnel of five to six feet is arched, and experts believe it to be of the Khilji period. According to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), this discovery is a significant achievement. More evidence can be found in this excavation, and a team of experts will be constituted, which will help in digging in the coming days.

The excavation has been stopped for the time being after the initial part of the arched structure of the tunnel has become visible. The tunnel is being protected by boundary tax to avoid any damage. According to archaeologists, all such structures around Siri Fort date back to the Khilji dynasty, which were built during the 13th and 14th centuries. This fort was built in the year 1303, on behalf of Alauddin Khilji to avoid Mongol invasion. ASI has found this tunnel on the premises of Children’s Museum located near Siri Fort.

The work of making the gate of the museum is going on. This tunnel came to the fore at the time of digging in it. A temporary road was being constructed to connect the front gate with the main road for the convenience of the people visiting here. Digging was being done for this only. A tunnel with an arched structure has been discovered during the excavation itself. A four-meter-wide path was being made from the front gate to the main road, during which this arch-like structure has been seen.

Officials have to say that now digging will not be done in this area. The structure will be kept like this, and they have left it for the visitors to see. Now people visiting the museum can see this tunnel as well. The Children’s Museum was started in the year 2011. It houses about 30 works of popular monuments and sculptures from India and abroad. In view of the increasing popularity of the museum among the people, it was being upgraded. According to officials, more works will be added to the museum.

Only one end of the tunnel is visible in the excavation. It can also be very long. Due to not being fully excavated, its size has not been ascertained. However, this was not a formal excavation site. Digging was being done to make way here. At present, its digging has been stopped, and the walls visible as tunnels are being preserved.
