A price clarification has been issued for milk buyers. Amul said there will be no change in prices of milk sold in pouches. The company noted that expectations of a cut were misplaced for this category.
Only ultra-high-temperature (UHT) milk packaged in tetra packs will see a reduction. The change follows a move to lower GST on this specific category, making it relatively cheaper for consumers.
UHT milk is heated for a short period to around 135 degrees Celsius. This kills nearly all microorganisms and allows storage for months when sealed in tetra or similar aseptic packaging.
Earlier talk suggested a ₹3–₹4 per litre drop across the board after GST rationalisation. Amul clarified that such a reduction is not applicable to pouch milk because it did not face the same GST burden as UHT tetra pack milk.
With the revised GST structure now notified, only tetra pack UHT milk will reflect lower prices. Regular pouch milk rates remain where they were.
- Pouch milk prices remain unchanged.
- UHT tetra pack milk to become cheaper.
- Price cut is due to a GST reduction on UHT category.
- UHT is processed at ~135°C for long shelf life.
- Talk of broad ₹3–₹4/litre cuts does not apply to pouch milk.
