New Delhi: Indian airline Air India has finalized an order for over 800 LEAP engines from CFM International. The engines will be used to power Air India’s new fleet of 210 Airbus A320neo/A321neos and 190 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. In addition to the engine order, the two companies have also signed a multi-year services agreement that will cover Air India’s entire fleet of LEAP engines.
Air India had previously announced the record order for more than 800 LEAP engines in February of this year. The airline’s Managing Director and CEO, Campbell Wilson, expressed delight at the deal, stating that the introduction of the LEAP engine on a larger scale, along with the services agreement, will help optimize operations in terms of environmental impact and operational cost, while benefiting customers.
CFM International President and CEO, Gaël Méheust, described Air India’s renewed trust as a major milestone for the company. He stated that the order strengthens CFM’s presence in India and commits the company to further supporting Air India’s development with the best CFM standards in terms of reliability, efficiency, and customer support.
CFM International is a joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines, with each company holding a 50% stake.
Air India has been a customer of CFM since 2002, when it started operating Airbus A320ceo aircraft powered by CFM56-5B engines. In 2017, the airline began operating A320neos, becoming the first LEAP-1A powered operator in India. Currently, Air India has 27 LEAP-1A-powered A320neo family aircraft in its fleet.
