In a significant policy move aimed at supporting India’s ex-Agniveers, the Yogi Adityanath-led Cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal to grant 20% reservation in direct recruitment for the posts of constables, PAC personnel, mounted police, and firemen in the Uttar Pradesh Police department.
With this, Uttar Pradesh has become the first state in the country to implement such a reservation policy for Agniveer veterans.
Inclusive of All Social Categories; Age Relaxation Also Announced
The reservation will apply across all categories—General, SC, ST, and OBC. In case the Agniveer belongs to a reserved category like SC, they will also be eligible for reservation benefits under that category in addition to the Agniveer quota.
Furthermore, three years of age relaxation will be provided to Agniveers applying for these positions. Only those who have completed their four-year term of service under the Agnipath scheme will be considered eligible for the benefits.
First Batch of Reserved Seats to Be Available in 2026
Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna stated that the move aims to provide meaningful employment opportunities to Agniveers after completing their four-year service. He added that the first recruitment drive under this policy will take place in 2026, aligning with the discharge of the first batch of Agniveers.
Currently, 20,000+ posts are set to be filled in the upcoming UP Police recruitment, and eligible Agniveers will benefit from the 20% reservation within these posts.
