Delhi'S Ghazipur To Get Fifth Waste-To-Energy Plant By 2027, Tackling City'S Growing Garbage Crisis And Powering Homes

What’s inside:

This article discusses Delhi’s plans for a new waste-to-energy plant and its impact on waste management in the city.

Delhi is set to get its fifth waste-to-energy plant, which will be located in Ghazipur. This new facility aims to address the city’s growing garbage issue and is expected to start operations by December 2027.

The Ghazipur plant will process 1,300 tonnes of waste every day and produce 12 megawatts of electricity. This initiative is part of the government’s effort to manage waste better and decrease reliance on open dumping sites. The project tender will likely be finalized by the end of 2025, with construction beginning soon after.

Currently, Delhi has four operational waste-to-energy plants at Okhla, Ghazipur (existing unit), Narela-Bawana, and Tehkhand, processing over 6,250 tonnes of waste daily. However, the city generates more than 12,000 tonnes of waste each day, leading to overflowing landfills.

Key updates include plans to increase the Okhla plant’s capacity by 1,000 tonnes per day and add another 1,000 tonnes at Tehkhand. These enhancements aim to boost the overall waste processing capacity by March 2027, which will help reduce the strain on existing facilities.

Looking ahead, it is estimated that by 2030, Delhi’s daily waste generation may reach 14,124 tonnes. Without more capacity, this could create serious environmental and health challenges for residents, especially those living near landfill sites.

Summary:

  • Delhi will build its fifth waste-to-energy plant in Ghazipur.

  • The plant will process 1,300 tonnes of waste daily and generate 12 megawatts of electricity.

  • Current plants in Delhi process over 6,250 tonnes of waste but need more capacity.

  • Plans are in place to increase capacity at existing plants by 2,000 tonnes per day.

  • By 2030, Delhi’s waste generation is expected to rise significantly, posing environmental risks.
