A grand 27-meter-high clock tower is set to become a new symbol of Lutyens’ Delhi, with the Tal Katora roundabout chosen as its site. The proposal, aimed at enhancing the visual and cultural identity of the capital’s most prestigious zone, has been approved by the Delhi Urban Art Commission.
The initiative is being spearheaded by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and was announced by NDMC Vice-Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal, who said the project seeks to provide a distinctive landmark for Lutyens’ Delhi—something most major cities across India already boast.
Octagonal Structure with Heritage-Inspired Design
According to Chahal, the tower will span eight meters in diameter and will follow an octagonal design. The structure will be constructed using RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) and adorned with a layer of heritage-style mud bricks. Aesthetic elements such as granite, steel railings, and sangemarmar (marble) will be incorporated to enhance its architectural appeal.
Estimated Cost and Timeline
The estimated cost of the project is ₹1.3 crore, and the NDMC has set a target to complete the construction by December 2025. The tower will also include internal staircases, making routine maintenance and clock adjustments easier.
A Timeless Landmark for the Capital
NDMC officials stated that the tower is not only functional but will serve as a symbol of civic pride and urban identity, especially in a historic zone like Lutyens’ Delhi. Once completed, the clock tower is expected to become a notable addition to Delhi’s architectural heritage, joining the ranks of iconic urban markers across India.
