The iconic Kalka-Shimla toy train—an enduring symbol of Himachal Pradesh’s colonial-era charm and a UNESCO World Heritage marvel—will not operate beyond Tara Devi station until June 12, 2025, due to critical repair work on Bridge No. 800.
According to railway officials, the suspension of services is expected to continue for at least 14 days, during which no trains will arrive at Shimla railway station. This move is likely to impact hundreds of tourists who flock to the city daily using this scenic route, especially as the summer tourist season is in full swing.
Maintenance Work on Heritage Route Deemed Critical Following Past Damage
The urgent repair involves structural reinforcement and restoration on a key bridge that had sustained damage during the devastating monsoon of August 2023, which led to soil collapse near Summer Hill, a location en route to Shimla. The landslide caused a portion of the track to dangle dangerously, prompting a series of phased closures and partial operations ever since.
Officials clarified that all toy train services will now temporarily terminate at Tara Devi station, approximately 6 km before Shimla. Passengers are advised to make alternative arrangements from Tara Devi onward.
