In a significant step towards improving traffic movement and addressing the growing problem of unauthorized roadside parking, the Delhi government has announced the construction of a multilevel parking facility near Mahipalpur, along the service lane of National Highway-48 (NH-48).

The decision was made following a site inspection by senior officials, after which New Delhi District Magistrate (DM) instructed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to initiate work on the project near Mahipalpur village.

NH-48 Service Lane Suffers from Chronic Parking Violations

Officials have confirmed that increasing illegal parking, especially along service lanes near hotels and shops, has been a major cause of traffic congestion and road safety issues on NH-48. The new parking facility is expected to ease the burden on these lanes and offer organized vehicle accommodation.

Vehicles parked haphazardly on the road often block traffic and force pedestrians to navigate through dangerous lanes. Traffic personnel and local residents have raised the issue multiple times, demanding a permanent solution.

Two Sites Identified for Parking Infrastructure Development

During the inspection, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was directed to mark two possible locations for developing parking spaces. One proposed site is in front of the NHAI convenience centre along the service road, while the second is a vacant plot behind Mahipalpur flyover, near Mahipalpur-Mahipalpur Road junction.

It was suggested that the latter site could accommodate a multilevel parking structure, thereby utilizing idle land more effectively. The site, which lies behind the entrance to Mahipalpur village, would provide easy access to parked vehicles without disturbing the traffic flow on the main roads.

NHAI and DDA to Oversee Implementation; Transport Department to Coordinate

The NHAI, along with the DDA and other civic agencies, will be responsible for implementing the project. The Delhi Traffic Police has also submitted a report to identify problem areas and support the relocation of existing parking to these new structured facilities.

New Delhi DM’s office has stated that the coordination between multiple departments—traffic police, PWD, DDA, and local administration—will be crucial to ensuring smooth execution. The Delhi Police will also increase patrolling to discourage illegal parking in high-congestion zones.
