In a major infrastructure development for Bihar, the Central Government has given the green signal to the state’s third expressway—the six-lane Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway—along with the four-lane realignment of the Ramjanaki route between Mashrakh and Bhittha Morh via Chakia. These projects are set to enhance regional mobility and reduce travel time and cost across North Bihar and neighboring states.

Six-Lane Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway to Span Eight Districts in Bihar

417 km of the 525.6 km Expressway to Be Built Within Bihar; Estimated Cost ₹27,522 Crore

The approved expressway will cover a total length of 525.6 kilometers, with 417 kilometers falling within Bihar’s territory. The estimated cost of the project is ₹27,522 crore. It will become Bihar’s third expressway, following approvals for the Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway and Patna-Purnia Expressway, and will allow a speed limit of up to 120 km/h.

The expressway will pass through eight districts of the state:

  1. West Champaran

  2. East Champaran

  3. Sheohar

  4. Sitamarhi

  5. Madhubani

  6. Supaul

  7. Araria

  8. Kishanganj

With a projected construction cost of ₹66 crore per kilometer, the expressway will significantly cut travel time between Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. Leaders including Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary and Road Construction Minister Nitin Nabin expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for the approval.

Four-Lane Upgrade for Ramjanaki Marg From Mashrakh to Bhittha Morh

Realignment Approved for 251 km in Bihar; Total Project Cost ₹7,269 Crore

The Mashrakh–Chakia–Bhittha Morh section of the Ramjanaki Marg has also been approved for upgradation to a four-lane highway. This route is part of a broader corridor connecting Chhawani in Uttar Pradesh through Mehrouna Ghat to the Nepal border at Bhittha Morh.

  • Length in UP: 185.5 km

  • Length in Bihar: 251 km

  • Estimated total project cost: ₹7,269 crore

  • Designed speed: 100 km/h

Out of the total stretch in Bihar, 103 km will pass through greenfield zones, while 42 km will be constructed on the existing alignment.

New Bypasses Planned to Decongest Key Towns Along the Route

Dumraon, Kesariya, Chakia-Madhuban, Shivhar, Bathnaha, and Sursand to See Dedicated Bypasses

To ensure smoother and uninterrupted traffic flow, bypasses will be developed in several congested areas, including:

  1. Dumraon

  2. Kesariya

  3. Chakia–Madhuban

  4. Naya Gaon Shivhar

  5. Bathnaha–Kumaha

  6. Sursand

These bypasses are expected to enhance safety and reduce congestion in these high-density zones.

Expressway and Ramjanaki Marg to Share Alignment for 21.6 km

Land Acquisition for 521.44 Hectares; ₹2,731 Crore Budgeted for Shared Infrastructure

An interesting aspect of this infrastructure push is the shared alignment between the Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway and the Ramjanaki route over a 21.6-kilometer stretch. For this, the government will acquire 521.44 hectares of land, with an estimated cost of ₹2,731 crore.

This integrated segment will feature:

  • 7 major bridges

  • 43 minor bridges

  • 6 viaducts

  • 6 Rail Over Bridges (ROBs)

  • 28 Vehicular Underpasses (VUPs)
