The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is set to launch a safety assessment rating for trucks and commercial vehicles. This initiative is similar to the India New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP), which rates cars based on safety. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari believes this will encourage manufacturers to produce safer vehicles.
Focus on E-Rickshaw Safety ⚡
The government is also working on safety standards for battery-powered e-rickshaws. These vehicles have been facing security issues, and improving their safety will enhance their quality and create more job opportunities.
Addressing Road Safety Concerns 🚦
India reports around 4.8 lakh road accidents every year, leading to 1.8 lakh fatalities. The government prioritizes road safety, expanding safe highways, and promoting electric vehicles (EVs). They aim to reduce logistics costs in the automobile sector from 14-16% to 9%, which is crucial for India’s economic growth.
Regulating Truck Driver Hours ⏱️
The Ministry is also working on laws to regulate truck drivers’ working hours. Currently, they often drive for 13-14 hours a day. To address the shortage of truck drivers, the government plans to establish 32 modern driving institutes across the country.
Road Safety Education in Schools 📚
Recently, road safety has been included in school curriculums for students from class 1 to 12. This initiative aims to raise awareness about road safety among young people.
Better Vehicle Choices for Consumers 🚗
Mr. David Ward, Emeritus President of GNCAP, stated that consumers now have better options for safe vehicles due to the BNCAP ratings. This aligns with the United Nations’ goal for road safety by 2030.
