Government Launches PM e-Drive Scheme ππ¨
The Center has received inputs from 14 states to boost its campaign under the PM e-Drive Scheme. This initiative aims to double the number of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations on highways and in major cities. The goal is to increase the total to 72,300 stations, encouraging more people to adopt green vehicles.
Investing in Charging Infrastructure π°β‘
The Ministry of Heavy Industries has launched this scheme with a budget of βΉ10,900 crore. Out of this, βΉ2,000 crore is specifically allocated for setting up electric charging stations. This scheme is expected to support more than 28.8 lakh electric vehicles by the end of FY 2026.
Strategic Locations for Charging Stations ποΈπ¦
The government is looking at busy areas like ports and airports for new charging stations. They are also identifying optimal locations on highways, especially for electric three-wheelers. The aim is to reduce pollution and global warming by providing service to over 14,000 electric buses.
Grants and Support for EVs ππ±
The scheme offers grants for acquiring electric buses, building charging networks, and upgrading testing facilities. The government plans to have a 30% share of EVs in new private vehicle registrations by 2030, which means significant growth in charging infrastructure is needed.
Overcoming Range Anxiety β οΈπ
By establishing charging stations on key highways like Delhi-Agra and Chennai-Trichy, the scheme aims to eliminate “range anxiety” among potential EV buyers. The Ministry of Power is also working on a 12 National Corridor plan for electrification, ensuring a robust charging network across the country.
