The Meteorological Department has reported that Thursday marked the hottest January day in Delhi in six years. The maximum temperature reached about 4.5 degrees above normal at the Safdarjung observatory. The previous record for the hottest day was on January 21, 2019, with a temperature of 28.7 degrees.

Rising Temperatures Ahead

On Thursday, slow winds caused Delhi’s air quality to fall into the ‘very poor’ category for the second consecutive day. While there was some light fog in the morning, the day remained warm. Temperatures are expected to rise even further in the coming days, with air quality likely to remain ‘very bad’. Thunderstorms are forecasted for February 3 and 4, which may bring some relief.

On Thursday morning, light fog was visible in Delhi, reducing visibility in Safdarjung to 500 meters. After 8 AM, the fog cleared, and strong sunlight dominated the day. The maximum temperature recorded at Safdarjung was 26.7 degrees Celsius, which is 4.6 degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature was 9.2 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal by 0.8 degrees. Humidity levels fluctuated between 97 and 46 percent. For Friday, light fog is expected in the morning, with light clouds anticipated during the day. The maximum temperature is predicted to fall between 25 to 27 degrees, with a minimum temperature of 9 to 11 degrees Celsius.

Rainfall Expected Next Week

The Meteorological Department has indicated that a Western disturbance will affect Delhi and nearby areas, leading to the possibility of light rain next week. An official mentioned that light to moderate rain or even snowfall is expected in the western Himalayan region, and light rain may occur in the northwest plains of India from January 31 to February 5. In Delhi, light rain or drizzle is likely on February 3 and 4.
