Pollution Levels Rise in Delhi
The pollution in Delhi has surged once again, prompting the implementation of Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Level 3 restrictions across the National Capital Region (NCR). In light of the worsening air quality and forecasts, these measures are aimed at combating the pollution crisis.
What Restrictions are in Place?
Under the new measures, private construction and demolition activities have been halted. This includes the suspension of stone-breaking operations and mining activities. Additionally, classes for students up to the fifth grade will now be conducted in a hybrid mode, combining online and offline learning. Furthermore, vehicles running on BS-3 petrol and BS-4 diesel will no longer be allowed on the roads in Delhi-NCR, although exemptions are made for individuals with disabilities.
Current Air Quality Situation
Delhi’s air quality has deteriorated significantly, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching alarming levels. As of Wednesday, the average AQI stood at 365, categorized as “very poor”. In fact, several areas in Delhi reported AQI levels exceeding 400, indicating hazardous conditions. The Central Pollution Control Board has noted that areas such as Bawana, Mundka, and Wazirpur recorded severe pollution, with AQI levels crossing 400 at 4 PM.
Weather Impacting Pollution Levels
The current low wind speed in the city, which is typically below 10 kilometers per hour, is contributing to the stagnation of pollutants in the air. This lack of wind hinders the dispersion of harmful particles, leaving residents to cope with increasingly poor air quality.
As the situation develops, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to minimize health risks associated with pollution.
