Bharatpur Bird Flu Alert: Avian Influenza Detected In Keoladeo National Park, Rajasthan, Raising Concerns.

Recently, a virus called Avian Influenza has been detected in Keoladeo National Park, located in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. This follows the examination of samples taken from two dead birds found in the sanctuary.

Virus Confirmation

Laboratory results from Bhopal confirmed that one of the dead birds, identified as Petand Stark, tested positive for the Influenza virus. This has raised concerns regarding the health of other birds in the Keoladeo sanctuary, prompting an alert at Keoladeo Ghana Bird Vihar.

Government Response

The state government issued this alert after bird flu cases were reported in Phalodi district in December 2024. In response, the Animal Husbandry Department collected samples from six blocks within the Keoladeo Ghana Bird Vihar. A total of 100 live birds and two dead birds were sent for testing, with results from the laboratory confirming the virus in one of the dead birds on January 25. Authorities have been instructed to activate response teams immediately to prevent the spread of the virus, and results for the 100 bird samples are still pending.

Official Statement

Manas Singh, the Deputy Director of Keoladeo National Park, stated that while one bird tested positive for the virus, it is too early to determine the extent of the outbreak in the park. Precautionary measures are being implemented thoroughly.

He mentioned that recently, they observed some young Petand Stark birds that displayed symptoms of the virus, which led to their samples being sent for testing. While one sample tested positive, the other came back negative. Additionally, samples from 100 other birds have also been sent to the laboratory for testing.

Current Situation

The Deputy Director noted that so far, only the young Petand Stark birds have shown symptoms. No signs of illness have been reported in migratory birds visiting the area. He reassured the public that there is no need for panic as long as people take proper precautions, such as avoiding contact with dead birds. The park is being inspected multiple times a day, and any deceased birds found are disposed of according to established protocols.
