Starting December, train passengers traveling in the general class will experience significant relief. They will no longer need to travel by hanging or squeezing through crowded compartments. Indian Railways is making efforts to improve facilities for general class travelers.
The railway ministry has already begun work, with a deadline set for November. As a result, starting next month, passengers traveling in the general class are more likely to find available seats compared to before.
According to the Ministry of Railways, various steps are being taken to ensure a more comfortable journey for passengers in the general class. One of the main initiatives is increasing the number of general coaches in regular trains. Over 1,000 new general coaches will be added to nearly 370 regular trains by November. This addition is expected to benefit around one lakh passengers daily.
New Coaches Being Manufactured
New general coaches are being manufactured at two coach factories: the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai and the Raebareli Coach Factory. These new coaches are being built at a fast pace, and Indian Railways plans to produce 10,000 general coaches in the next two years. This will allow around 8 lakh additional passengers to travel comfortably in the general class daily. Many of these new coaches will be LHB coaches, which are more comfortable than the older models.
Ongoing Work
The addition of general coaches has already started. Between July and October, 583 new general coaches were constructed and added to 229 regular trains, benefiting thousands of daily passengers who can now travel while seated.
