Soon Such Solar Panels Will Generate Electricity with Over 70% Efficiency
Researchers at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid have developed advanced intermediate band (IB) solar cells utilizing gallium phosphide (GaP) and titanium (Ti). These innovative solar cells boast energy conversion efficiencies of up to 60%, specifically designed to operate efficiently at wavelengths of 550 nm and higher.
The Problem with Traditional Silicon-Based Solar Cells
Traditional silicon-based solar cells are limited by the Shockley–Queisser (SQ) limit, with a maximum theoretical efficiency of only 33.7%. This inefficiency results in a significant portion of absorbed sunlight being wasted as heat, highlighting the need for more effective alternatives.
Breaking the SQ Limit with New Materials
To surpass the SQ limit, researchers have focused on materials like gallium phosphide (GaP), which offers a high bandgap of 2.26 eV, potentially enhancing energy conversion efficiency. The research team has been experimenting with GaP and Ti for over 15 years, aiming to create superior solar cells.
New Solar Cells Will Deliver Efficiency Up to 60%
Although the theoretical efficiency of the new solar cell design is estimated at 60%, current prototypes have not yet achieved commercial viability. Ongoing research aims to refine these cells and enhance their efficiency for future deployment.
